The new iPhone 4s and related apps have been taking the world by storm. A new application called "Find My Friends," allows a user to track the location of the phone on which the application is installed. This means that if an individual has a friend who has the installed application, that individual can see where the friend is at any time.
Shortly after the iPhone 4s went on sale, a man reported on a popular Mac related message board that he was going to file for divorce from his wife after he installed the application on her phone without her knowledge.
Suspecting that she was seeing another person behind his back, he texted her after he had installed the app. He asked her for her location, checking to see if she would tell him where she was. Her response did not match the location where "Find My Friends" showed she was. It was for this reason that he believed she was having an extra-marital affair.
The "Find my Friends" application has been advertised as a convenient way for families to keep track of each other's whereabouts and for friends to meet up with each other. However, it has the potential to be used in ways that may be less that desirable for those who value their privacy.
This application, like many applications, uses the GPS location service in the iPhone in useful ways if used with the consent of the iPhone user. Will this become a tactic used by suspicious spouses? Could it be used in divorce proceeding to show infidelity?
